The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus were launched by Apple on September 7, 2022, as we all predicted. They adopt the basic design of the iPhone 13 without significantly altering it; instead, they leave this task to the iPhone 14 Pro. The largest change from last year is the introduction of the “Plus” version and getting rid of the “mini” version.
New iPhone models but old chips
The two iPhone 14 models feature screens with diagonals of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, as the rumors had predicted. We find a neat design, with resistance to dust and water as well as Apple’s Ceramic Shield protection.
The devices use the older A15 Bionic processor, which has a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU. This is the chipset that the iPhone 13 Pro, not the iPhone 13, is equipped with which has only 4 cores on its GPU instead of 5. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus still offer faster performance than most Android devices.
Some new features
Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offer some new features. According to Apple, the iPhone 14 has the longest battery life, enabling it to last all day.
With a lens opening of f/1.5 and a stabilized primary sensor of 12-megapixels at 1.9 µm, the camera has also been upgraded. Apple claims that this makes night mode twice as fast and boosts low-light performance by almost 50%.
With a steady mode to capture dynamic situations even when using no gimbal, the stability of the sensor will be notably better on videos.
A 12 megapixel sensor with an f/1.9 lens opening and enhanced hybrid focusing in low-light, also powers the front camera. The overall performance in low-light is 38% better than it was last year.
The end of the SIM
Apple promotes eSIM by offering an onboard SIM. All the iPhone 14 models in the United States will no longer integrate a SIM card.
First off, only the eSIM versions of the new smartphones are offered for purchase in the US, eliminating the need for a SIM card drawer.
The satellite connection
Even more unexpectedly, the iPhone 14 has a satellite connection for SOS calls. But not all users will get to experience the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus’ most fascinating feature. Typically, you have to use a costly gear with a large antenna capable of aiming at a satellite for the satellite connection.
But, with the aid of an interface that makes it easier to point to the appropriate location in the sky, Apple was able to include this feature into its new iPhone 14 smartphones. This feature will be used in the event of no SMS access in an emergency. This mode will go through Find My and will be paid. The first two years are free with the purchase of an iPhone 14.
The iPhone first asks the user a few questions to determine the problem and then rapidly connects him or her to the appropriate emergency service via the satellite connection. Apple guarantees a message delivery time of 15 seconds if the sky is clear. The Find My app can now find the iPhone even in far-off places thanks to this capability.
Across November, the satellite connection will be accessible in both the US and Canada.
